Best Crystal Litter

The best crystal litter is the one whose stated bag life, scent and pack weight fit your box and your cat count, and the six crystal litter listings in this guide give very different figures for all three. We read the first six results for crystal litter on Amazon.com on 22 October 2026. All six are non-clumping silica products. Four give a duration per bag or per pack, one gives a clumping equivalence, and one sells a color-change crystal. The listings do not agree on how long a bag lasts, so the arithmetic in this guide turns each duration into a daily amount that you can compare.
Quick answer
- Every listing here is non-clumping. Where a listing gives directions, solid waste is scooped and the crystals are stirred.
- Longest stated life: LMJP’s 17.2 pound pack says up to 4 months, and PetSafe’s 8 pound Lavender bag says up to 2 months in a single-cat household.
- The listings’ own durations imply different daily amounts. A 4.3 pound bag for 30 days works out to about 0.14 pounds a day, and an 8 pound bag for one month works out to about 0.27 pounds a day.
- Two listings give a clumping equivalence, and they disagree. PetSafe says about 10 pounds replaces 50 pounds of clumping clay, which is a ratio of 5, while COCOYO says 4.3 pounds equals 15 pounds of clumping litter, a ratio of about 3.49.
How we chose
We searched Amazon.com for “crystal litter” and read the first six results on 22 October 2026. The six were Purina Tidy Cats Care Alert, PrettyLitter, PetSafe ScoopFree Fresh 2-pack, PetSafe ScoopFree Lavender 8 lb, LMJP 17.2 lb and COCOYO 17.2 lb. All six are listed in the first results and each is a crystal or silica litter, so none was excluded on product type. Lower on the page were a FUKUMARU tofu and bentonite blend and a second LMJP crystal listing, which we did not open. We opened all six pages. We used only what each page showed on 22 October 2026, and we did not use prices or buyer feedback in any part of the selection.
The six listings side by side
The table uses only figures each listing states. “Not stated” marks a cell where the text we read is silent.
| Listing | Crystal type (as stated) | Scent | Bag or pack weight | Duration claim | Listing dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purina Tidy Cats Care Alert, 8 lb | Silica, color-changing, non-clumping | Unscented | 8 lb | One bag lasts a full month | 5.1 x 9.85 x 16.95 in; 8 lb |
| PrettyLitter, 6 lb x 2 | Silica gel, non-clumping | Lotus Flower or Unscented | 6 lb x 2 (12 lb) | One bag lasts a full month | 12.8 x 11.14 x 7.52 in; 12 lb |
| PetSafe ScoopFree Fresh, 4.3 lb x 2 | Silica gel, non-clumping | Fresh | 4.3 lb x 2 | About 30 days per bag for one cat | 5.69 x 11.44 x 13.19 in; 9.19 lb |
| PetSafe ScoopFree Lavender, 8 lb | Silica, non-clumping | Lavender | 8 lb | Up to 2 months, single-cat household | 9.75 x 5.5 x 15.5 in; 8 lb |
| LMJP crystal, 4.3 lb x 4 | Silica gel, blue and white | Unscented | 17.2 lb | Up to 4 months | 17.2 x 13.3 x 7.52 in; 17.2 lb |
| COCOYO crystal, 4.3 lb x 4 | Silica gel, non-clumping | Unscented (Lavender also listed) | 17.2 lb | Up to 30 days per bag, single-cat homes | 17.42 x 13.39 x 7.21 in; 17.2 lb |
The duration column is the one most buyers compare first, and it is the one the listings state least consistently. Two give a duration per bag for one cat, two give a duration for a single-cat household, one gives a month per bag without a cat count, and one gives four months for a four-bag pack. The arithmetic section converts each one into a daily figure.
Daily use: the arithmetic
Each listing’s duration can be turned into the litter used per day with one formula:
pounds per day implied = bag weight in pounds / days the bag lasts
- PetSafe Fresh: 4.3 / 30 = 0.14 pounds a day, from the “about a month” figure for one 4.3 pound bag.
- PetSafe Lavender: 8 / 60 = 0.13 pounds a day, from “up to 2 months” for one 8 pound bag. Two months is 60 days.
- LMJP: 17.2 / 120 = 0.14 pounds a day, from “up to 4 months” for the full 17.2 pound pack. Four months is 120 days.
- COCOYO: 4.3 / 30 = 0.14 pounds a day, from “up to 30 days” for one 4.3 pound bag.
- PrettyLitter: 6 / 30 = 0.20 pounds a day, from “one bag lasts a full month” for one 6 pound bag. The bullets say each 6 pound bag lasts up to one month per cat.
- Purina Tidy Cats Care Alert: 8 / 30 = 0.27 pounds a day, from “one bag lasts a full month” for one 8 pound bag.
The four listings that say 30, 60 or 120 days all land near 0.13 to 0.14 pounds a day. PrettyLitter and Purina imply more litter used each day, about 0.20 and 0.27 pounds. Those two listings give a one-month figure in their highlights, so their implied rates are planning figures rather than limits. Use the rate that matches the way you clean the box.
Pack totals and package weights
A pack’s listed weight should equal its bag weight times the number of bags. The check below uses the package weight from each listing’s product details.
- PetSafe Fresh: 4.3 x 2 = 8.6 pounds of bags, against a listed package weight of 9.19 pounds. The gap is 9.19 – 8.6 = 0.59 pounds.
- PrettyLitter: 6 x 2 = 12 pounds, which matches the listed 12 pounds.
- LMJP: 4.3 x 4 = 17.2 pounds, which matches the listed 17.2 pounds.
- COCOYO: 4.3 x 4 = 17.2 pounds, which matches the listed 17.2 pounds.
- Purina and the PetSafe Lavender bag are single 8 pound bags, and the listed weight is 8 pounds for each.
Five of the six match exactly. The PetSafe Fresh pack does not, and its listing is 0.59 pounds heavier than its two bags, with no explanation given.
The clumping equivalence
Two listings say how much clumping litter one bag of crystals replaces. Dividing the clumping figure by the crystal figure gives the ratio each listing implies:
- PetSafe ScoopFree: 50 / 10 = 5. The listing says about 10 pounds of crystal litter replaces 50 pounds of clumping clay.
- COCOYO: 15 / 4.3 = 3.49. The listing says one 4.3 pound bag equals 15 pounds of clumping litter.
The two ratios are 5 and 3.49. The listings do not say what clumping litter each ratio compares against. A buyer who plans a year of litter with the PetSafe ratio would buy fewer crystals than a buyer who uses the COCOYO ratio, so the choice of ratio changes the order size. Ask for the clumping product named in the comparison before you rely on either figure.
What each listing says
Purina Tidy Cats Care Alert, 8 lb
The listing says:
- Silica crystals that are non-clumping, with a pH detection technology that the listing says changes color.
- Compare the crystals to the color guide within 2 hours of use. Establish a baseline color over five days, according to the directions.
- Long-lasting ammonia odor control. The listing says the litter is unscented and has no clumps to remove.
- Fill with 2 to 3 inches. Scoop solids daily, stir frequently, and after 20 to 30 days for one cat, dispose of the used litter, wash the box with mild detergent, dry it and refill.
- The listing says cleaning the box with bleach or adding a baking soda deodorizer can alter the color results.
- Product dimensions 5.1 x 9.85 x 16.95 inches; 8 pounds; model 00070230100085; manufacturer Nestle Purina Litter.
Purina’s listing is the one in the set with a color indicator and a set of rules about the color. Its directions name two cleaning products that can change the color, which makes the routine more specific than the other listings. The listing does not say what a color means, and this guide does not interpret it. The bag life of one month is a single-cat figure in the directions, and the listing gives no comparison for multi-cat homes.
PrettyLitter, 6 lb x 2
The listing says:
- Silica gel formula, non-clumping, and up to two times longer than traditional clumping clay, according to the bullets.
- Low dust and low tracking, with silica gel crystals that absorb moisture through micropores.
- Lotus flower botanicals for scent, and an unscented version in the variant row.
- Works with regular litter boxes and with automatic self-cleaning litter boxes, according to the bullets.
- One bag lasts a full month, and each 6 pound bag lasts up to one month per cat.
- Product dimensions 12.8 x 11.14 x 7.52 inches; 12 pounds; model pl6Lotus-2.
PrettyLitter is the only listing that names both regular and automatic boxes in its bullets, and its two-pack gives 12 pounds, which matches its bag weights exactly. The “two times longer” comparison has no clay figure or time period. The listing also says the formula is free from crystalline silica and propylene glycol, which is a manufacturer statement we did not verify. The color-change feature appears in the title. We have described it only as a stated feature.
PetSafe ScoopFree Fresh, 2-pack
The listing says:
- Non-clumping silica gel crystals that absorb liquid and dry solid waste, with a fresh scent layered over the crystals.
- About 10 pounds of this crystal litter replaces 50 pounds of clumping clay, according to the bullets.
- 99 percent dust free and low tracking, according to the bullets.
- Each 4.3 pound bag covers one cat for about a month. The 2-pack is described as roughly two months.
- Works with PetSafe ScoopFree self-cleaning boxes and with standard pans, boxes or reusable trays.
- Directions: keep the litter away from bathrooms, showers and basements, because humidity shortens its life. Stir the crystals if the cat urinates in one spot.
- Package dimensions 5.69 x 11.44 x 13.19 inches; 9.19 pounds; model ZAC60-15711.
The Fresh pack is the most fully described listing in this group. Its directions include a humidity rule, and its compatibility statement covers both the ScoopFree tray and standard pans. The package weight is the one figure that does not match its bags, as the pack check above shows. The duration is written as “about a month,” so the daily-use rate of 0.14 pounds is an implied figure.
PetSafe ScoopFree Lavender, 8 lb
The listing says:
- Ultra-absorbent silica cat litter that absorbs urine and dries solid waste.
- One 8 pound bag can last up to two months in a single-cat household, according to the bullets.
- 99 percent dust free and low tracking.
- Designed for ScoopFree self-cleaning crystal boxes, and it can refill any litter box, pan or reusable tray.
- Scent: lavender. Product dimensions 9.75 x 5.5 x 15.5 inches; 8 pounds; model PAC00-17866.
The Lavender bag is the single-bag option from the same maker as the Fresh pack. Its two-month figure gives the lowest daily rate in the group at 0.13 pounds, but the listing sets that figure for a single-cat household. The bag size and the scent are both stated, and its directions match the Fresh pack’s humidity and stirring rules.
LMJP crystal, 17.2 lb
The listing says:
- Premium silica gel that absorbs and solidifies large amounts of liquid.
- The 17.2 pound quantity lasts up to four months, according to the bullets and the listing highlight.
- Unique pellet formula, and the bullets say it helps reduce tracking.
- Four bags of 4.3 pounds each. The variant table gives the material as silica gel, the scent as unscented, the capacity as 7.8 kilograms and the crystal color as blue and white.
- Product dimensions 17.2 x 13.3 x 7.52 inches; 17.2 pounds; model 1.
LMJP is the largest pack in the set and has the longest stated life. The four-bag split is a practical detail: a bag can be replaced each month if the listing’s rate holds. The directions field in the captured text reads “no”, so the listing gives no cleaning routine. For a routine that works with any crystal litter, see Best Way to Clean Litter Box.
COCOYO crystal, 17.2 lb
The listing says:
- Silica gel crystal that absorbs moisture and does not clump. The bullets say the litter reduces solid clumps.
- One 4.3 pound bag equals 15 pounds of clumping litter, according to the highlight.
- Each bag lasts up to 30 days in single-cat homes, according to the highlight.
- Directions: pour into the box, scoop out the solid waste and replenish as needed. The listing says it does not clump.
- Product dimensions 17.42 x 13.39 x 7.21 inches; 17.2 pounds; model Y41; manufacturer U-Play Corp.
COCOYO’s pack sums correctly, and its duration is the same as the PetSafe Fresh bag. Its equivalence claim is the smaller of the two in this group, at about 3.49. The listing’s directions are simple and do not mention a humidity rule or a color indicator. For a comparison of litter types beyond crystals, see Types of Cat Litter.

Buying checklist
- Decide whether you need a color indicator. Purina Tidy Cats Care Alert and PrettyLitter both describe a color change; the other four do not.
- Check the scent before you buy. PetSafe Fresh is fresh-scented, PetSafe Lavender is lavender, LMJP and COCOYO are unscented in the listings we read, and PrettyLitter offers lotus flower or unscented.
- Match the bag life to your cat count. The PetSafe Lavender two-month figure is for a single-cat household, and the 30 day figures for PetSafe Fresh and COCOYO are also single-cat figures.
- Check the box type. PetSafe names its own ScoopFree boxes and standard pans; PrettyLitter names regular and automatic boxes; LMJP’s table says it fits all types of litter boxes.
- Measure the pack against your schedule. A pack of four 4.3 pound bags lasts about four months at the listed rate, so one order can cover a season. For a kitten’s first box, see Best Litter Box for Kittens.
- Plan the humidity. The PetSafe Fresh directions say to keep the box out of bathrooms, showers and basements, because humidity shortens the life of the crystals. For the room itself, see Where to Put a Litter Box.
- Pick the box first. For odor control across a whole box, see Best Cat Litter Box for Odor Control, and for a box for several cats, see Best Cat Box for Multiple Cats.
- Keep the cleaning products away from the box if you want the color to read correctly. Purina says bleach or a baking soda deodorizer can alter the results.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading the color as a verdict. The Purina listing describes a pH-linked color change and does not say what each color means, so the color is only the listing’s indicator, with no meaning given for it.
- Comparing bag life across listings without the cat count. Single-cat figures on PetSafe Lavender, PetSafe Fresh and COCOYO do not carry over to a multi-cat home.
- Using the clumping equivalence as a shopping figure. The PetSafe ratio is 5 and the COCOYO ratio is 3.49, and the listings do not name the clumping product compared.
- Skipping the humidity rule. The PetSafe directions say a damp room shortens the life of the crystals.
- Cleaning with bleach and expecting the color to stay accurate. Purina’s listing says bleach and baking soda deodorizers can alter the color results.
What we could not verify
- The listings do not state what a color change means, and the color-change feature is the maker’s description.
- The duration claims are the makers’ statements. We did not measure the litter over a month in any box.
- The listings do not give a dust figure that can be compared across the six products. Most state 99 percent dust free, and PrettyLitter and LMJP describe low dust without a percentage.
- The “up to two times longer” claim from PrettyLitter has no clay figure or period, so it cannot be checked.
- The PrettyLitter ingredient statement, free from crystalline silica and propylene glycol, is a manufacturer statement we did not verify.
- The listings do not give the weight of each crystal or the crystal size, so pellet size cannot be compared across the group.
- We did not verify the PetSafe 0.59 pound gap on the Fresh pack, and the listing gives no explanation.
FAQ
Is crystal litter the same as clumping litter?
No. Every listing here is non-clumping. Solid waste is scooped out, and the crystals absorb liquid and dry the rest. COCOYO’s listing says it does not clump, and Purina’s says there are no clumps to remove. The clumping ratios in this guide compare the bag weight with a clumping product, but the crystals do not form clumps themselves.
How long does one bag of crystal litter last?
The listings differ. PetSafe Fresh says about 30 days per 4.3 pound bag for one cat. PetSafe Lavender says up to two months for one 8 pound bag in a single-cat household. Purina says one 8 pound bag lasts a full month. LMJP says its 17.2 pound pack lasts up to four months. Divide the bag weight by the days to get the daily use each listing implies.
Do I need to change crystal litter as often as clay?
The listings do not state a clay schedule, so this guide cannot compare the two directly. The PetSafe Fresh directions say to stir the crystals and keep them out of humid rooms, and the Purina directions say to dispose of the litter and wash the box after 20 to 30 days for one cat. For a non-crystal option that also changes less often, see Recycled Paper Cat Litter.
Which crystal litter works with an automatic box?
PetSafe names its own ScoopFree self-cleaning crystal boxes, and it says the Fresh and Lavender bags work with them and with standard pans and reusable trays. PrettyLitter’s bullets name automatic self-cleaning boxes. LMJP’s table says it fits all types of litter boxes. COCOYO and Purina do not state automatic compatibility in the text we read.
Why do the clumping equivalence figures differ?
PetSafe says about 10 pounds of crystals replace 50 pounds of clumping clay, which is a ratio of 5. COCOYO says 4.3 pounds equal 15 pounds of clumping litter, which is about 3.49. The listings do not name the clumping litter used for either comparison, so the two figures cannot be checked against each other. Ask the seller before relying on either figure.
Is a color-change crystal worth the extra step?
It depends on what you want to track. Purina and PrettyLitter both describe color-change crystals. The listings say the color follows pH but do not say what each color means, and they give directions for reading the color. If you want the color, follow the directions on the listing and avoid the cleaning products the Purina listing names.
Bottom line
For a stated life of several months in one order, the LMJP 17.2 pound pack gives the longest figure in this group. For a fresh scent in a PetSafe ScoopFree box, the Fresh pack gives the most detailed directions. For a color-change option, Purina Tidy Cats Care Alert is the one listing that names a color guide and a cleaning rule. For the broader choice of litter types and boxes, see Scoopable Cat Litter: What One Listing Says, Kitty Litter Systems: What One Listing Says and Top Entry Litter Pan.
